Leroux sometimes refers to it as "the voice of man", although Erik also refers to himself as "The Phantom of The Opera", "The Angel of Music" or "The Red Death". It is also revealed that "Erik" was not, in fact, his birth name, but that it was given to him "by accident", as recounted by the character himself in the novel. Erik laments the fact that his mother was horrified by his appearance (and says that she gets to abandon him), and that his father, a master bricklayer, never got to know him.
In the original novel few details are given regarding Erik's past, although there is no shortage of hints and implications throughout the book.
He is also the protagonist and antagonist of many film adaptations of the novel, notably the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney, and the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Erik (better known as The Phantom of the Opera, commonly known as The Phantom) is the main character in the 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l´Opéra) by Gaston Leroux.
